The announcement came via a Twitter message which directed fans to a new website, Soundgardenworld.com.

Cornell gave no other details about the forthcoming reunion which would be the bands first time playing together since their break-up in 1997.

According to Billboard, sources are stating that the band is currently entertaining offers to play major U.S. and international festivals this year.

Any reunion shows would have to accommodate drummer Matt Cameron’s touring schedule with Pearl Jam, which Cameron plays drums in.

Pearl Jam recently announced a North American tour to coincide with the second weekend of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival taking place April 29 – May 2.
