In yet another example that artists no longer need music labels, Music-streaming service Last.fm has begun paying unsigned artists royalties for every song played on its service. Over 70,000 artists and small music labels have signed up for the program bringing the total number of uploaded tracks to over 450,000. Last.fm’s move gives musicians and indie labels an alternative to the official royalty-collecting organization for musicians, SoundExchange.
By removing
SoundExchange (the middleman) from the process
Last.fm says artist who sign up will receive more than twice the royalty rate they normally would if their material was played on commercial radio. So how much are artists getting paid? Well that depends on where you track is played (see
FAQs below) but it can be as much as “10% of the Share of
Last.fm’s Net Revenue from the free radio service.” What
Last.fm has done is further prove to up-and-coming artists and indie artists (in some cases small labels) that they don’t need a record label to succeed.

The Filter, a media recommendation engine backed by
Peter Gabriel, has launched. The site, which makes recommendations on movies, music, and online video, is now open to the public at
Thefilter.com. We would write a review of the website but
Techchrunch already wrote a great
review:
The idea of the Website is the world of entertainment filtered for you. We go out and find lots of information, and filter that according to your taste.

The more we know about you, the more we can give you a daily dose of entertainment content. For now, though, the company is focusing mostly on getting the music recommendations right. Click on the music tab and you are presented with a list of songs selected for especially for you, as well as a list of songs that “everyone is into right now.” You can play each list, but only 30-second samples from each (a major drawback to the site that could be rectified through a deal with We7, an ad-supported, full-track online music service that Gabriel is also an investor in).

As yet more evidence that DRM is dead, Napster, once the world’s most popular music site, has unveil their new DRM-free music store. The store offers over six million MP3’s including music from all major labels and they are all without digital rights management (DRM). By removing DRM from the tracks, users will be able to play the MP3’s on all portable music devices including the iPod. Both Apple’s iTunes and Amazon’s music store offer DRM-free tracks as well.

Are you a fan of music/ Flickr mashup service site MyPlayList.biz? Well now you have a chance to own a major stake in the website. The site, which allows you to search for artist and create your own playlist which can then be embedded on any website or social network, is on the market for free. The owner, Agent Blue, is looking to give a majority stake (51%) to any person or company who can give the site a good home and continue to grow it.
