Late last week Citigroup announced that they have officially finalized the sale of EMI‘s music label to Vivendi/Universal Music Group for upwards of $1.91 billion.

The label’s publishing division, EMI Music Publishing, is set to be sold off to Sony.

With the sale, Vivendi/Universal Music Group get a huge array of artist to add to their catalogue including Pink Floyd, Coldplay, Beastie Boys, and the biggest of all the Beatles.

The deal, which will need to be approved by U.S. and European regulatory authorities, has already been met with disapproval and by the Independent Music Companies Association (IMPALA), which represents reveal European indie labels. The IMPALA is asking the European Commission to block the deal on anti-trust grounds, claiming that such a sale would create a monopoly.

In a statement, Vivendi CEO Jean-Bernard Lévy said: “We are very proud to welcome EMI into the Vivendi family. We all respect the labels within EMI as well as the artists and employees who contribute to its success. They will find within our Group a safe, long-term home, headquartered in Europe.”

Coldplay have premiered the music video for “Paradise“.

The track is off the band’s forthcoming album, ‘Mylo Xyloto‘.

‘Mylo Xyloto‘ is due out October 24.

Coldplay have announced plans to play at “American Express Unstaged” on October 26.

The concert, which is taking place in Spain, is set to be live streamed on YouTube for fans who can’t make it to the event.

The band will be playing in support of their forthcoming album, ‘MYLO XYLOTO‘, which will be released a couple days prior to the Spanish concert.

During their concert in Atlanta, Georgia this past weekend, Coldplay paid tribute to the recently broken-up R.E.M. with a cover of “Everybody Hurts“.

Before jumping into the cover, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin said “One of our favourite bands of all time, REM, for some crazy reason have finished and it’s sad. So with the most respect in the world, this is just to show how much they meant to us.”

This time around the band have premiere track, “Paradise“, another track off the band’s upcoming album ‘Mylo Xyloto‘.

‘Mylo Xyloto‘ is due out October 24 via Capitol.

Willie Nelson has covered Coldplay‘s hit track “The Scientist” for a new short film entitled, “Back to the Start.”

The animated film was created by Johnny Kelly and commissioned by Chipotle, the fast casual dining chain.

Nelson‘s cover is now available on iTunes for $0.99 with proceeds going to benefit The Chipotle Cultivate Foundation.

After releasing details of their new album, ‘Mylo Xyloto‘, last week, Coldplay sat down with Billboard to discuss the new album.

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin revealed to Billboard that the forthcoming album might be the band’s last.

“I always feel like each record is our last, but at the moment I’m in the stage where I really mean it. I just can’t imagine how we would do another one, because we’ve thrown everything. When it’s finished, which hopefully should be pretty soon — it has to be pretty soon –we won’t have been able to put more work into it, which I guess is the only thing we can really do,” revealed the frontman.

Martin added, “‘I don’t know. But I never know. I think it would be bad if I was like, “yeah, we’ve got 15 songs up our sleeves. I don’t have anything left.”

‘Mylo Xyloto‘ is due out October 24 via Parlophone Records.

Coldplay have revealed the name of their forthcoming highly anticipated new album.

The band’s fifth studio album will be titled ‘Mylo Xyloto‘.

The new album was produced by Markus Dravs, Daniel Green and Rik Simpson, with enoxification and additional composition by Brian Eno.

‘Mylo Xyloto‘ is set to be released in digital, CD and vinyl formats October 24 via Parlophone Records.

A new album will also be released as a special limited edition Pop-Up version which will include a 12″ x 12″ hardback book containing graffiti pop-up art designed by David A. Carter, vinyl, CD and exclusive content including photographs, and excerpts from the studio diary and the band’s personal notebooks.

In a tribute to the late singer, Coldplay recently covered Amy Winehouse’s “Rehab“.

The band covered the hit song during their performance at the Splendour In The Grass Festival in Australia.

Coldplay are set to play a free concert in Los Angeles later this summer.

The band will play the free show as part of the fourth annual Samsung AT&T Summer Krush concert series.

The free L.A. show is set to take place August 3 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on the UCLA campus.

A limited number of free tickets are set to be released next week via registration at samsungsummerkrush2011.com.
