Monsters of Folk, the new sideproject band featuring Bright Eyes‘ Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, and M. Ward, are giving away the first single off the band’s forthcoming self-titled album.

Weezer, Franz Ferdinand, and Jet have been announced to play Baltimore’s forthcoming Virgin Mobile Festival.

Despite rampant rumors that the festival would not take place this year due to the down economy, organizers have announced that the event will in not only go on, but will be free.

The festival will now take place over one day, August 30 and will now take place at Baltimore’s Merriweather Post Pavilion.

Also set to play the one-day bash is The Bravery, Taking Back Sunday, Girl Talk, Public Enemy, and Mates of State.

Bloc Party, Placebo, and Calvin Harris are among the acts set to take part in the month-long iTunes Live Festival in London.

The event, which will kick off on July 2nd, will see bands play free shows every night throughout July at London’s Roundhouse.

Other acts confirmed to play the event include Friendly Fires, Oasis, Mika, and Kasabian.

Although the event is free, it is not open to the public, and you must win tickets to the shows by entering at ituneslive.co.uk.

Elvis Costello has announced plans to play two fee shows to celebrate the release of his new album, ‘The Secret, The Profane, and the Sugarcane‘.

Costello is set to play a free gig at indie record store Amoeba Music in San Francisco on June 22 at Noon with a second free show taking place at Amoeba Music in Los Angeles later that night at 8pm.

The singer will also be signing copies of his new album at both shows.

Fans who are able to attend will also receive a commemorative silkscreened poster.

Those unable to attend the free shows can stream the Los Angles performance online at Amoeba.com.

Sonic Youth are set for a free in-store performance at the Apple store in SoHo later tonight (June 9).

The band are set to play the Apple store at 9pm today with doors opening at 7:30.

In other Sonic Youth news, the band are set to kick off their North American tour June 27 in Chicago.

Among the dates announced are shows in Toronto, New York, Seattle, Portland, and Denver.

Green Day are teaming up with MySpace and are giving hundreds of fans a chance to catch the band at their intimate show in New York later this month.

The band will be performing at the Webster Hall on May 19 in support of their forthcoming album, ‘21st Century Breakdown‘, and now over 300 fans will get in for free.

Tickets for the show go on sale to the public this Saturday (May 9) but fans can try to score free tickets by emailing their name, city, and email address to thelist@myspacemusic.com.

The week of the band’s concert 300 winners will be selected at random and will receive free tickets to the concert.

Fans who can’t make it to the show will get an opportunity to view the concert online via MySpace Music sometime after the band’s performance.

‘21st Century Breakdown‘ is set for release May 15.

Dinosaur Jr. are giving fans a free track off of their forthcoming album, ‘Farm‘.

The song, ‘I Want To Know You‘, is available to  download on the bands website.

The track is the first single from the new album which is due out on June 23.
